Drones and RC
I caught the drone bug after stumbling across some racing videos online. Zipping through obstacles at insane speeds had me hooked immediately. My first commercial pre-built drone was so disappointing, it was sluggish and nowhere near as responsive as the ones I'd seen online.
So I took matters into my own hands and ordered parts to build one from scratch. There's something incredibly satisfying about soldering your first flight controller, mounting motors, and configuring everything just right. After countless crashes and rebuilds I finally had something that could really hook.
My friends and I got so into it that we ended up starting Toowoomba's first drone racing club. Organizing those events – setting up courses with gates and flags, figuring out timing systems – was almost as fun as the racing itself.
My first fixed wing drone. Not pictured: the main spar broke during a high-G Top Gun maneuver and the wings gave me a round of applause for effort
Attempt #2 at fixed wing. The Team Black Sheep Caipirinha flew much much better
